Lyndale was founded in 1983 by a local resident after surgery for cancer and realised there was no follow-on support. With the help of her GP she began the group in her own home, as numbers increased, they moved to another venue with more space. Fundraising began and the opportunity arose when the house now called Lyndale came up for sale.
Thanks to a grant from Knowsley Council, funding from a couple of Trusts and a mortgage enabled the Trustees to buy “our house” as it is lovingly called.
Lyndale has grown over the years and now sees over 100 people each week accessing our services. Each year we receive 100+ new referrals from the local hospitals and hospices, GP’s and other health professionals as well as social services and organisations around Knowsley and the wider Liverpool area.
Lyndale offers one to one and group support, relaxation sessions, complementary therapies, beauty therapies, art, craft and computer classes.
We arrange days out and fundraising events through the year. A Ramblers group go out each month and Culture Vulture group enjoy visiting historical places of interest.
Lyndale is the only solely volunteer led group in the North West of the UK. We have 40 volunteers who have either had cancer themselves or cared for a family member or friend through their cancer journey. We do not have any paid staff but pay for our therapists and a contract cleaner.
In 2015 we received Lottery funding of £290,000 to extend and refurbish the property to house the ever-increasing numbers of people attending the group. Thanks to money raised over 3 consecutive years by the Mayors of Knowsley they contributed £101,000 towards the building project costing £400,000.
As a member of Knowsley Chamber we have been able to connect to companies for IT support and have a new website built. We have also contacted a solicitor to assist us regarding GDPR.
We are looking for funding through Knowsley Chamber Member either by sponsorship for a specific event, a fundraising project or a company who would consider us as their Charity for the Year. We would also be grateful to assist companies who have a Charity Fund or who’s staff run fundraising activities. Donations of items which we could use for a Raffle Prize or tombola is always gratefully received.
