Knowsley Chamber’s Business Engagement Manger (Working Well) Cheryl had the great privilege of attending a truly momentous occasion – the celebration of Breast Mates’ remarkable achievement in receiving the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

This prestigious accolade was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, in recognition of the extraordinary dedication and tireless work of the volunteers who make up this incredible charity. It was an honour for Cheryl witness this special moment and to celebrate with the team whose efforts have had such a profound impact on the local community.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest recognition a volunteer group can receive in the UK, often described as the “MBE for volunteer groups.” This award is granted to groups that have made a significant contribution to their communities through voluntary work and is awarded for life. It is a symbol of outstanding service and dedication to others, and the award is announced annually on the 14th of November, on the King’s birthday.

Breast Mates, based in Prescot, Knowsley, is a shining example of this commitment to the community. Run entirely by volunteers, this charity is dedicated to supporting individuals, families, and friends as they navigate the difficult and often traumatic journey of breast cancer. Through their selfless work, they provide much-needed emotional and practical support, helping to ease the burden on those affected by this challenging condition. Their unwavering commitment to helping others, often in the most difficult of times, has made them an invaluable part of the local community.

The event itself took place at the historic Prescot Town Hall, a fitting location for such an important occasion. In attendance were several distinguished guests, including the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, Deputy Lord Lieutenants, and the Mayors of three Boroughs, alongside their Consorts. The Chief Executive and Leader of Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council were also present to offer their congratulations and support. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of community involvement and the positive impact that dedicated volunteers can have on the lives of those around them.

Breast Mates’ volunteers continue to be at the heart of everything they do. From offering emotional support and hosting support groups to providing vital information about breast cancer and treatment options, their work has made a lasting difference in the lives of many. This recognition with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service is a testament to the passion, compassion, and commitment of the team and all the volunteers who give their time and energy to help others in their community.

As this outstanding achievement is celebrated, it is important to reflect on the vital role that volunteers play in shaping the communities we live in. Breast Mates has shown us all that through dedication and compassion, we can make a lasting difference and leave a legacy of support for those who need it most.

Cheryl was incredibly proud to have been a part of this celebration and to witness the exceptional work that Breast Mates does. Their dedication to supporting those affected by breast cancer is truly inspiring, and the recognition they have received is well-deserved. Here’s to many more years of their invaluable service, and to the continued success and growth of this incredible charity.
