Horizon Power Group Prepares to Begin Installation on Major Water Source Heat Pump Project in Liverpool

Months of detailed planning, engineering and collaboration pave the way for the next phase of landmark low-carbon heating scheme.

Horizon Power Group is preparing to commence the installation phase of a major Water Source Heat Pump (WSHP) project in Liverpool following the successful completion of an extensive programme of feasibility studies, engineering assessments, design development and stakeholder collaboration.

The project marks a significant milestone in the delivery of a resilient, future-ready heating solution, with the new system designed to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining reliability and operational performance.

Since being appointed to deliver the scheme, Horizon Power Group has worked closely with the client and the wider project team to review, refine and optimise every aspect of the design. This collaborative approach has resulted in a comprehensive transformation of the site’s plantroom, ensuring the system is engineered for long-term efficiency, resilience and sustainability.

The project has included a range of detailed technical activities, including operational, carbon and lifecycle cost modelling, winter dock-water temperature monitoring to validate system performance, and the development of a weather-compensated heating control strategy to maximise seasonal efficiency.

The new Water Source Heat Pumps will become the site’s primary heat source, while the existing boilers will remain in place to provide resilience during peak demand and operational contingency. Additional works include the installation of a new buffer vessel, upgraded distribution pipework, pumps, heat metering and control systems, alongside ventilation improvements, acoustic and vibration assessments, DSEAR compliance reviews, electrical infrastructure upgrades, full Building Management System (BMS) integration and a comprehensive commissioning strategy.

A defining feature of the project has been the collaborative relationship between all stakeholders involved.

Working alongside consultants, designers, utility providers, specialist manufacturers, contractors and on-site operational teams has enabled technical challenges to be identified early and resolved collectively. This partnership has strengthened the overall design, improved operational resilience and ensured every stage of the project has been carefully considered before installation begins.

The project will now progress through procurement, installation, commissioning and final handover, bringing months of engineering expertise from the design table onto site.
