Primal Mentality CIC is a Knowsley-based not-for-profit organisation using angling, nature and outdoor experiences to support the mental health, wellbeing and development of children, young people and adults.
Founded by Chris Jervis, Primal Mentality was created from a belief that the outdoors can provide something very different from a traditional support setting. Fishing gives people time, space and a shared activity where conversations can happen naturally, confidence can grow and positive relationships can be built.
Today, Primal Mentality works across Knowsley and the wider North West, delivering programmes alongside schools, local authorities, youth services, healthcare organisations, police-funded projects and community partners.
Our work includes youth angling programmes, outdoor wellbeing sessions, school and Alternative Provision programmes, adult wellbeing activities, SEND-friendly provision, community fishing sessions and structured learning opportunities including the Get Fishing Award and John Muir Award.
Our approach goes far beyond simply teaching someone how to fish. Young people learn patience, responsibility, teamwork, respect for wildlife and the environment, while developing practical skills and spending meaningful time away from screens and everyday pressures.
For some participants, it may be their first opportunity to hold a fishing rod or spend meaningful time in nature. For others, our sessions provide routine, friendship, a sense of belonging and somewhere they feel comfortable being themselves.
Primal Mentality is led by qualified and experienced practitioners, including Angling Trust coaching and Outdoor Mental Health Practitioner expertise, with a strong focus on safeguarding, inclusion, fish welfare and creating safe, welcoming environments.
We are also passionate about developing the future of angling. Alongside our community programmes, we run grassroots carp-fishing opportunities for young people and are proud sponsors of the England Women’s Carp Team, helping champion greater participation and positive role models for women and girls within the sport.
