Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is one of the biggest changes to the UK tax system in recent years, and it’s important that individuals and businesses start preparing now.
From April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords who fall within the scope of MTD will be required to keep digital records and submit updates to HMRC using approved MTD software. This moves the traditional annual reporting process to a more frequent, digital approach.
Key Dates to Be Aware Of
- 31 January 2026 – Submit your Self Assessment tax return for the 2024–25 tax year
- 6 April 2026 – Start keeping digital records using MTD for Income Tax software
- 7 August 2026 – First quarterly update due
- 7 November 2026 – Second quarterly update due
- 31 January 2027 – Submit Self Assessment return in the usual way for the 2025–26 tax year
- 7 February 2027 – Third quarterly update
- 7 May 2027 – Fourth quarterly update
From January 2028, tax returns for the 2026–27 tax year will be submitted directly to HMRC through MTD-compliant software, completing the transition to the new digital system.
