Knowsley Hall is set to open its doors once again this October for a pair of exclusive history study days that promise to inspire, entertain, and educate by bringing to life 600 years of British history through the remarkable story of the Derby family.

The innovative programme, curated by the Countess of Derby, shines a light on the family’s pivotal role in shaping Britain’s political, cultural, and artistic heritage. Previous events have explored themes such as The Derby Women, and the upcoming sessions will focus on The Life and Legacy of the 13th Earl of Derby and The Life and Legacy of the 14th Earl of Derby.

Raising Awareness Through History

For the Countess of Derby, the project has a deeper purpose. Since 2016, the borough of Knowsley has been without A-level provision, leaving local pupils without a pathway into sixth-form education.

“It is concerning that our local pupils find themselves without any sixth form opportunity. How can children feel aspiration or hope if they are not offered the opportunity of further education?” said the Countess. “I was delighted to welcome schools, including The Lord Derby Academy and St. Gregory’s Catholic High School, to our first study day in July.”

Acclaimed writer and Children’s Poet Laureate Frank Cottrell Boyce, who is partnering with the Countess, added:
“Knowsley has a profound and thrilling connection to some of the greatest and most dramatic moments of English history. At the same time, it is one of the most deprived boroughs in the country. These study days connect people here with their own rich heritage – and remind the wider world of the incredible legacy this place holds.”

October’s Programme

The October events offer an in-depth look at two towering figures in the Derby family’s history:

15 October 2025 – The Life and Legacy of the 13th Earl of Derby
Natural historian and patron of Edward Lear, the 13th Earl’s impact will be explored by an expert panel including Caroline Derby, Dr Alan Crosby, Dr Clemency Fisher, Jenny Uglow, Dr Xanthe Brooke, and Frank Cottrell Boyce. Visitors will also learn about Lear’s time at Knowsley Hall between 1831 and 1837.

Scholars including Professor Andrew O’Shaughnessy, Dr Geoffrey Hicks, Anne Somerset Carr, Professor Christopher Leslie Brown, and Professor Jeanie Grant Moore will examine how his early travels shaped his politics and legacy.
