It sounds almost too simple to be true.
But the same physiological response your body triggers when faced with genuine life threatening danger is the exact same response it triggers when your inbox hits 200 unread emails, when a difficult conversation is looming, when the quarterly targets are not where they need to be, or when three things demand your attention at exactly the same time.
Your nervous system does not distinguish between a predator in the woods and a back to back meeting schedule.
It just reacts.

What is actually happening inside the body
When the brain perceives a threat, whether real or imagined, physical or psychological, it triggers the release of cortisol and adrenaline through the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. Heart rate elevates. Breathing becomes shallow and rapid. Muscles tense in preparation for physical action. Blood is diverted away from the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for rational thinking, emotional regulation, and complex decision making, and redirected toward the survival centres of the brain.
This is the fight or flight response. Evolutionarily, it is brilliant. In a world where physical threats were real and immediate, this mechanism kept us alive.
In a modern professional environment, it is causing significant and largely unacknowledged damage.
Because the body was designed to activate this response, resolve the threat through physical action, and then return to a regulated baseline. What it was never designed for is sustaining that activation for hours, days, weeks, and months at a time with no genuine resolution.
This is chronic nervous system dysregulation. And it is far more prevalent in workplaces across the UK than most organisations are willing to acknowledge.
What chronic dysregulation actually costs
When cortisol remains chronically elevated, the consequences extend far beyond feeling stressed or tired.

The hike feels better not just because the view is good. It feels better because the body is finally doing what it was designed to do.
