Big Help Project invites you to celebrate Windrush’s75th anniversary with events they’re holding through June

22nd June 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush docking on our shores, bringing with it over a thousand people. People who came to build a life for themselves, bringing with them culture, food, history, arts and reshaped Britain in more ways than were ever expected.

As an organisation that works to empower people out of poverty, Big Help Project has seen first hand the hardship that descendants of the Windrush scandal continue to face and understands the importance of educating our community on this matter.

Following their successful 2022 events programme, commemorating the arrival and continued culture of the Windrush generation, Big Help Project have announced two new events for 2023.

Saturday 3rd June, Big Help Project take over The Lutyens Crypt &Treasury at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. This event, running 4pm-8pm, is free to attend, boasting music from the fabulous Jennifer John and her Sense of Sound choir and a breath-taking poetry performance from Toxteth’s own Levi Tafari. Make a day of it, with Granby Market regulars Eat Up Gud dishing out their Caribbean flavours free of charge to the first 150 attendees, you’ll have a full stomach to explore the exhibition that will encompass the space. With more to be announced, this event is set to be the perfect start to a month of celebration, education, and community.

Big Help Project’s second event ends the month with a nod back to the musical fourpiece that changed the world: The Real Thing. Step back Intime and enter The Cavern Club, Thursday 29th June. Beginning at 6pm,the evening will comprise of a screening of ‘Everything – The Real Thing Story’, as well as a Q&A with Chris Amoo, who will be interviewed by Yaw Owusu (PRS Power Up programme, LIMF). As an essential piece of the Merseyside music scene, The Real Thing’s reputation and legacy is symbolic of Black-British culture. Accompanied by spoken word by Blue Saint and a celebration of Mandela8, this event truly will be Everything!

Entry to both events will be entirely free of charge, with tickets to The Cavern Club event being limited to 100. All are welcome to come along to celebrate and learn about the Windrush generation and their descendants. Big Help Project’s commitment to honouring, celebrating, and supporting members of the Windrush generation will be continued with our work across the Liverpool City Region.
