Liverpool Everyman goes back to the 1980s with Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls. Set in a divisive decade of strikes and uprisings; as well as music and fashion that transformed Britain, Top Girls is the story of two sisters whose lives take them on very different journeys. Marlene is at the top of her game. As the new Managing Director of Top Girls Employment Agency in the glitz and glamour of 1980s London, she hosts an extraordinary dinner party to celebrate her achievements. But what is the true cost of her success? Returning home to L8, a showdown with sister Joyce lays bare some hidden truths. As the sisters struggle to reconcile their differing realities, what does it mean for the next generation?
Fantastical and fiercely funny, Top Girls is still as powerful as ever. Originally staged in the 80s, the play is a furious attack on Thatcherism, asking what happens if we choose our individual wealth over the needs of our families and communities. It couldn’t feel more relevant right now. As Director Suba Das says, “This is a production propelled by the power and politics of Scouse women who believe enough is enough and with the show opening on International Women’s Day, we’ll deliver a new dimension to the play, asking what success under a regime that measures people solely by their financial value means specifically for women of colour.”
Written by Caryl Churchill, listed in Britain’s top 10 most influential artists of the last 50 years (Sky Arts 2022), this is one of the ‘must see shows’ of 2023 (What’s On Stage) and you won’t want to miss it.
